They’ve Got the Whole World in Their Hands

We bought one of those solar system kits at JoAnn Fabrics and actually finished it this time. (We got one several years ago when we did astronomy the first time, but mostly the planets got commandeered for other purposes.) As you can see the orbits are a little crazy, but it was fun to do.

I toyed with the idea of affixing the planets to the ceiling fan. Wouldn’t THAT be fun?? But in the end I thought the better of it. The trouble with projects like this is, after the fun of making them, what do you do with them? For now it’s in this rather anti-climactic position — hanging from an ancient clothes-drying rack given me by my mother-in-law, on a yardstick held in place before a sagging bookcase.

I remember wrestling with what to do with school projects, too, both when we homeschooled and when they were in Christian private school. One time we made a skeleton out of empty and rinsed out milk cartons. He hung around for a while but we finally disposed of him.
