Bewithus

I found this ornament in among the cd’s today as I was rooting around: a wooden angel with a broad smile, apparent fish hooks on the wings, and a simple prayer scrawled as a single word across the breast.

My youngest made it a few years ago. It bemused me then. It bemuses me now.

Why that prayer? Of the Christmas phrases stressed in song and children’s Advent books, “Be with us” isn’t really one of the top ten. “Joy to the World.” “Gloria in excelsis Deo.” “Unto us a child is born.”

Yet she chose, “Be with us.” I wholeheartedly affirm it. It’s the prayer that underlies most other prayers, the longing that comes closest to the surface during this season, the desire it often takes faith to believe has been satisfied.

DebD — LOL, we loves the preciousssssss. We needs the precioussssssss. We wants it, yesssssss.

Back to the ornament. It’s adorable, and speaks the Father’s heart — He sent His Son, Jesus, to be with us.

Isn’t that the heart of a child, to say to a beloved, loving parent, “Be with us,” because we need you to be with us? Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will not be afraid, because You, O LORD, are with me.
