Nature Study

Prospective Homeowners

We gave my older daughter a chickadee house for her birthday. We hung it on a maple outside the front window and have been enjoying watching the birds check it out.

The first morning, several chickadees noticed it immediately.

“It’s awfully small. How will eight fubsy birdlings fit in there?” asked Younger Daughter. She’s quoting the Handbook of Nature Study‘s description of the chickadee’s nesting habits.

Next came some titmice, who returned again this morning. Or maybe this morning brought a different bunch… I sure can’t tell them apart.

A pair of Carolina wrens discovered it today as well.

It’s fun to see them considering whether this will be their dream home. We’d be delighted to have any of them — in fact, we’re fighting the urge to go out and buy more nesting boxes!
