An explanation

I’ve been blogging since the end of June at a WordPress.com site, but as of today Across the Page is back in business at this location.
As I noted here, my blog was mortally injured last time I tried to upgrade, and although my blog host was able to restore the content, the blog itself was [...]

Back up and running

A few days ago, I inadvertantly vaporized my blog in the process of updating my version of WordPress. To anyone who’s visited here and been met with an error message, sorry for the confusion! My webhost was able to restore the content by rolling it back to a time prior to the crash. I’m relieved [...]

Boundaries with technology

Last week, I found myself in a discussion about facebook at a family gathering. I got these typical responses:

facebook is changing modern discourse. It’s a little easier for our generation to abstain, but if someone in the younger generation isn’t on facebook, it will “ruin their lives.”
“A few months ago, Janet, [...]

Two jars

I missed the Poetry Friday round-up yesterday. Fridays are so busy for us that I haven’t been able to participate much this year. But my friend Ruth has an interesting post on tears in the “new normal” since the earthquake in Haiti.
My first thought was of this Jill Briscoe poem, which I’m familiar with through [...]

Thank goodness

My old blog is restored. Apparently the system shut it down on its own by mistake. Instead of emailing the “contact” link within the notice inside my blog, I emailed “support,” and received a prompt response and an apology from Wordpress.
I have about half of it imported to this site, so I may try to [...]

Of blogging and bustle

It’s been a refreshing week. My break from blogging produced enough additional hours in the day to yield:

9 Christmas presents made by Yours Truly at the sewing machine (applause permitted);
a handful of new pieces on the piano;
more eye-contact with my family, as the gravitational pull of a computer monitor did not work its magic on [...]

Taking a break

One of the ways I’ve been planning to celebrate Advent is to take a break from blogging. Some folks give things up for Lent; I’m doing it for Advent.
I’ll be gone from this space for awhile, starting tonight. I’ll probably be back again after a bit.
Have a blessed Christmas season.

Writing and the round file

Earlier this week, I went looking for my grandfather’s obituary. I couldn’t remember the details of his military service. I never found the obituary, but I did end up sorting through my box full of old journals and throwing some of them away. There were just some things in there — old struggles, chapters now [...]

New to me

I’ve wanted to switch from 1 sidebar to 3 — a wide one on top and then two narrower ones beneath. One of the many perks of this particular theme is that it has an options page that allows you to choose how wide the content area is, and how many sidebars you want. But [...]

Confessions of a blogoholic

The story of my life as a mother is the peeling back of layer after layer of selfishness. The birth of my children released a new kind of love in me: fiercer, more helpless, more inescapable than any I’d experienced before. But its effect has been to shine a bright light on the paltry, flimsy supporting muscle-tone [...]
