On Reading

Christmas Books

There’s an opened jelly jar on the counter, dishes strewn on the table, toast crumbs everywhere. But outdoors, we’ve accomplished great things.

9″ of snow! That’s more than we ever got last year in the winter that wasn’t. Except for the tension of driving home from my in-laws’ last night as the storm was getting underway, it’s been a wonderful thing to be visited by the blue swirl on the radar map.

Christmas was a wonderful time, but for the purposes of this blog I’ll just note books received. I got these four:

books1The Berry was from my parents; the two middle books are gifts from my husband; the one on the right is from my sister in law. I am lamenting my inability to read several books simultaneously right now! I want to read them all at once. But of course I’m tackling the Berry first and will probably take up the others in the order they are pictured.

Younger Daughter got a Nancy Drew book — about which she is not very excited. “I’m not doing Nancy Drew yet!” she informs me. We’ll see…

Older Daughter received these. See if you can detect a theme.

Top two from me, bottom one from my dad. She’s quite thrilled about all three.

We’re in for some good reading in the next few weeks around here! Have you received some book bounty this year? I look forward to reading about them either in the comments here or in the book blogosphere in general!

I know what you mean about wishing we could absorb several books at once. I got four for Christmas as well and can’t wait to delve into them — and then I just saw one on my desk given to me last year that I have been wanting to read as well.

I have a couple of Berry books on my TBR list but haven’t gotten to them. Since I have never read him yet, is there one of his books you’d recommend to a new reader?

We got some flurries, yesterday, but, sadly, no accumulation.

You got four too, huh? I suppose it’s good to make the pleasure last and read slowly, but somehow it doesn’t happen that way!

‘The Memory of Old Jack’ was my first Wendell Berry read, and that’s the one I always recommend. It’s a beautiful book in every way.

I got a book (booklet) for Christmas for the first time in many years. It was a nice addition.

Joining the “I wish I could read and absorb 4 books at once” club. Alas, it’s getting harder and harder just to do two at once.

Love the snow. Snow seems to complete the Christmasy feel.

Sadly, no books this year as presents for me other than what I bought myself.

The books my 6 year old got for Christmas would fit with your daughter’s theme (although at a younger level). The funniest for him was a National Geographic Angry Birds showing real photos of real angry birds. He also got several “how to draw birds” books to fit with his two main obsessions.

My SIL took all my kids to National Geographic yesterday to see the Birds of Paradise exhibit. They reported that it was fantastic.
