Rainy days and Mondays

It has rained so steadily lately that the trees are all growing moss and lichen on their bark. I’ve never noticed that before. I do hope some heat and sunshine will dry them out — if it ever comes.

Meanwhile, there are buds, and I love the willows. They are such a new, light, defiant splash of green against the grays and browns:

So much for the “rainy days” part of my title. Now for the “Mondays” part.

  • Two weeks ago yesterday (Monday), Older Daughter’s hamster was injured.
  • One week ago yesterday, she died.
  • Yesterday, Younger Daughter’s hamster died. Suddenly.

She seemed so vigorous. Two days ago she was roaring around the kitchen in her hamster ball as usual.

But last night during cage cleaning, it became apparent that she was failing fast. You can see all the concern surrounding her.

This morning, she’s gone.

The reason I have that photo is that Younger Daughter had just asked me to take a picture. And the reason for that was, I had the camera out to take a picture of our newest addition. Older Daughter got a new hamster, named Tibsy:

“Are you going to put the picture on your blog?” asked my husband.

“How lame am I?” I replied. “Taking pictures of hamsters to broadcast into cyberspace.”

“It’s not lame. It’s life,” he replied.

Life — and death, of which we’ve now had two tastes in two weeks. Younger Daughter hasn’t awakened this morning, but when she does I will have a brokenhearted 7-year-old to console.

At least we will have flowers. She picked these yesterday, out in our non-chemically-enhanced lawn, during a break in the rain.

    Oh, dear!
Loving anything or anyone makes us vulnerable, and I agree with your husband, that it is life, or at least the fallen life we know so well, that includes so much death and loss. And sharing this aspect is one of the things we humans do for each other — even with fellow bloggers! It’s a lot of pathos for your family, when it includes young children.

I’m sorry for your daughter’s loss – it can be so very hard for them to take. Congratulations on your newest addition.

We had all that chilly spring rain last week. This week it is sunny & muggy with thunderstorms most evenings.

We’ve had lots of rain and near-flooding — and I heard we’re in for more.

I’m so sorry about this second loss, especially so soon after the first.

It ISN’T lame. It IS life! I still distinctly remember how I felt when my first hamster died. It’s sad – esp. when you are little and you care so much for your pets! Glad to know the update!
