September Nightstand
5 Minutes for Books hosts this monthly invitation to share your month’s reading — completed, in-process, and planned.
Here’s what I’ve read since last month’s Nightstand, with links to my reviews:
- For the Children’s Sake (Susan Schaeffer Macauley): An introduction to Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy.
- Dangerous Journey: The Story of Pilgrim’s Progress (Oliver Hunkin): A fabulous illustrated retelling of the classic. This was a great read-aloud for us.
- Seeing Past Z: Nurturing the Imagination in a Fast-Forward World (Beth Kephart): A memoir about how this author encourages in her son a love for reading and imaginative pursuits.
- Rebecca (Daphne DuMaurier): I finally read this classic and followed it up with Hitchcock’s movie version. (In the process I discovered that Hitchcock had a terror of eggs. So there’s a free factoid for today.)
- A Slant of Sun: One Child’s Courage (Beth Kephart): I liked Seeing Past Z so much I wanted to go back and read this, which tells the first part of the story.
- Wide Sargasso Sea (Jean Rhys): Mr. Rochester’s first wife tells her side of the story in this prequel to Jane Eyre.
- The Wheel on the School ( Meindert DeJong): Another read-aloud for us, much loved.
- Reflections on the Psalms (C.S. Lewis): A favorite author’s perspective.
Currently I’m reading From God to Us: How We Got Our Bible (Geisler and Nix). Lewis’s book was just one more reminder that I need a refresher course in how the Bible came to be in its current form. Lately I’ve come across some questions that bother me because I can’t answer them, and I think this book will supply some of the knowledge I need.

Interesting list! I was just thinking the other day that I’d never read Rebecca but would like too. Love CS Lewis as well – I hope you find answers there! He always makes me think.
Lewis’s book raised more questions than it answered this time (mostly about scripture), but I think it will be a good thing!
That’s a lot of reading, Janet!
I’m looking forward to your thoughts on your current selection!
From God to Us sounds like a useful read and The Wheels on the School sounds fun too!
By the way, I like your blog’s new look. It’s perfect for fall!
Impressive reading accomplishments! I’m intrigued about Dangerous Journey– will have to check our library this week for this one.
Thanks for linking up with us!
Rebecca was an interesting read – I’m glad I finally got to it. I love finding a list with books I haven’t read or heard of – I’ll look into some of these. Happy reading!
I just got a copy of For the Children’s Sake so I popped over and read your review. It’s not what I expected, exactly, but I’m looking forward to reading it!
Thanks for sharing of your conquests and goals!
Love the header with the fall trees and fenceline!
So odd that of all the scary things Hitchcock produced, he was afraid of eggs. I can understand being grossed out by them, but afraid?
This is an impressive list, Janet. You are a true reading cognoscente.
I like your approach as well … Seeing Past Z led to A Slant of the Sun, DuMaurier led to Rhys, Lewis led to Geisler/Nix. I tend to do the same thing.
