Spring Reading Thing

I learned about this reading challenge, hosted at Callapidder Days, just this morning at Living to Tell the Story, and then I remembered seeing it at Stray Thoughts last year. It’s a low-pressure challenge in which we set some reading goals, then write another post in June reporting on how we’ve progressed. So here’s my list of goals:

  • The Mysterious Benedict Society, a youth novel I’ve seen reviewed positively and want to try.
  • One of the theological works suggested in Sacred Pathways.
  • Thirty minutes of sustained reading aloud to my children each day. We do a fair amount of reading throughout the day, but it’s broken up. I think my 5-year-old is missing out as I slack off a bit on the read-alouds, now that my older daughter is doing so much reading on her own. (I also have a tough time with getting sleepy when I read aloud for long — I confess!)
  • Finish Isaiah. (I’m at chapter 21.)
  • Finish Children of Men.

There it is: a modest list, but for someone who doesn’t especially like making reading commitments, it puts a very serious expression on my face. See you again in June when it’s time to report in!

  • I saw the movie: Children of Men. I didn’t realize it was a book. I’ll have to check that out. Isaiah is a wonderful book of the Bible!

  • Great list. I like how you are adding your own twist to the challenge. I let my 13yo read aloud to all of us on the days that I just don’t feel up to it. Good luck and happy reading. :)

  • I absolutely hear you on the sustained reading to the kids idea. My two-year-old won’t sit for a stack of books the way her brother used to – but now that he’s six, he reads for hours on his own and gets more in than I could possibly read aloud! Maybe we should read through The Mysterious Benedict Society together! Thanks for the inspiration.

  • Great list – I’m like you with my reading aloud – it’s slacked off now that my oldest reads to himself. But I’ve learned recently he really enjoys the reading aloud so I’m trying to get back to it!

  • I don’t think I am familiar with any of those, except Isaiah, of course, and the mentions you’ve made of Sacred Pathways before.

I wish I had kept reading aloud to my kids. We did when we were homeschooling for four years. When they went back into a Christian school, they were so busy there just never seemed to be time.

  • this is a great list and i really like your goals. Happy reading!

  • Very good goals! I’ve been known to get sleepy during read-alouds, too. :) Oh, and speaking of reading with your kids, you might want to look at Jennifer’s Read Together challenge in April.

We really liked Mysterious Benedict Society in our house. Hope you enjoy it, and all your other reading! Thanks for joining the challenge!

  • Wishing you good success on reaching your goals. Happy Reading!

  • Welcome to the challenge :) I very much enjoyed The Mysterious Benedict Society.

  • You’ve set some great goals for the challenge. James reads out loud more to me that I do to him. He likes to read a story to me at bedtime. :) We’ll compare at the end of the challenge so see what we thought of Mysterious Benedict Society.

  • Good list! I’m studying Isaiah now with my women’s group at church … wow. It is not a quick read! Thanks for coming by my blog earlier!

  • The Mysterious Benedict Society has a bookmark in it for right now. I have so many books I am reading. I just need to sit down and finish. :)

  • I really liked your reading goals! I need to read aloud longer to my son as well. He is very active (almost 2) and doesn’t want to sit still. I will have to make a better effort with that.. Have fun reading this Spring.

  • I’ve been known to actually nod off to sleep in the middle of reading to my kids, especially if it’s something really boring to me that we’re homeschooling at the time. Of course, they are very quiet and sneak off. :)

  • Looks like a very doable list. I started reading the Mysterious Benedict Society at B&N with my niece a while ago and now you’ve got me in the mood to go finish it!

  • I think your list is wonderful, and I love the goal of reading to your kids and finishing Isaiah:-) My son read Mysterious Benedict Society and he loved it, and has the sequel. I’m hoping to read some great updates/reviews here!

  • I ckicked over to Amazon to look at the Mysterious… and it has great reviews. That may have to go on my list! Good luck with the challenge.

  • love the reading 30 minutes a day to the kids – great goal!
