Sacred Pathways explores the notion of different spiritual temperaments. It dovetails with an interest I’ve had lately as a homeschooler in learning styles and multiple intelligences. I have some hunches, but I’d like to find some guidance in determining my daughters’ learning styles before I choose resources for next year. The materials I’m using (all recommended in The Well-Trained Mind) are working okay. But I think there may be others that would work better.
It’s a tricky subject, to me anyway. I want to find curriculum that will generate enthusiasm and encourage my daughters’ strengths. But I think it’s important to strengthen some of their weaker areas, too. My goals as a classical homeschooler include a particular body of knowledge I want my children to develop, and a particular philosophy of learning in the three developmental phases of the trivium. But within that framework, there’s plenty of room for individualization. As Sacred Pathways is reminding me, we’re all unique creations. One of the real privileges of homeschooling is being able to truly personalize the learning process and filter it through the greatest pedagogical technique ever made: love.
I googled “learning styles” and discovered several online assessments, but they weren’t geared toward children (plus who knows how reliable they are). I typed it in over at Amazon and a staggering number of entries popped up. Where to start? (I didn’t see Multiple Intelligences for Dummies anywhere in the list…)

I learned about learning styles from Inge Cannon’s cassette tape Learning Styles: How to Match Curriculum and Methods to Your Child’s Needs at http://www.edplus.com/Tapes.html .
Their site is undergoing some maintenance, but you should be able to pull up that page. Also, I think they’re ditching (have ditched?) the cassettes and are transitioning to an MP3 download thing-y (a technical term).
